Same Old Lang Syne

A Little Saturday Night Music

Classical Music Mashup

Not a Big Fan of Santa Claus...

Call me Scrooge, but I'm not a big fan of Santa Claus. I raised five children without ever telling them that any of their Christmas gifts came from Santa Claus, and they turned out pretty well. No "Better watch out" or "Be good, because Santa knows if you're naughty or nice!"

I was the youngest of three kids. I don't know when my brother and sister found out, but I remember being very disillusioned when I found out Santa wasn't real. I determined that if I ever had kids, I would never lie to them about anything, if it were at all possible.

Santa, the Tooth Fairy...what is it with parents pulling the wool over the eyes of their children? If you cause your children to put their confidence in what you say and you lie to them, what difference is there between you and a "con" man? (Other than they don't have enough money for you to swindle them out of, that they didn't either get from you or the "Tooth Fairy"?)

Still, there was one soft spot for Santa in my heart. When I was a kid, there was this one Christmas decoration of a cute, light up Santa, who looked like he was sneaking around trying not to get caught.

The original electric light that illuminated him from within is long gone. I've determined to replace that with an updated LED bulb & socket that should carry him into the next century. The red of his coat had a kind of flocking on it, which has mostly worn away. He shows his age, but then, so do I!

I guess what brought these memories to the fore, was a random stroll through a department store. (Okay, it was Tar-zhay, so sue me!) And I saw this cookie jar of Santa as lumberjack: dressed in a plaid shirt, with axe in hand, having just chopped down a Christmas tree. It just struck me as really cute.

In the course of couple of days, it struck me as the perfect gift for my five kids, (and sister-in-law) most of them who now have kids of their own. Instead of stocking stuffers this year, I determined to do cookie jar stuffers, and proceeded to fill each jar with a small package of cookies, Jelly Bellys, and cocoa mix, and a little something else.

Santa's workshop, 2016:

Still not a big fan of the Claus, but I understand the original St. Nicholas was a good man of faith and conviction. Just get rid of the red nosed tundra rats, Bad Santas, drummer boys and magic hat snowmen and we'll be fine!

“As Julian Assange has made crystal clear, the leaks did not come from the Russians. As I have explained countless times, they are not hacks, they are insider leaks – there is a major difference between the two,” he wrote. “And it should be said again and again, that if Hillary Clinton had not connived with the DNC to fix the primary schedule to disadvantage Bernie, if she had not received advance notice of live debate questions to use against Bernie, if she had not accepted massive donations to the Clinton foundation and family members in return for foreign policy influence, if she had not failed to distance herself from some very weird and troubling people, then none of this would have happened.”

Kerry's Laps(e)

John Kerry is well known for his lapses in judgement: leaving Viet Nam after three questionable Purple Hearts, slandering the troops before Congress, throwing his medals over the White House fence, serially marrying for money and combating terror in France with a performance by James Taylor.

Now, don't get me wrong! I like Sweet Baby James as much as the next guy, but as an effective response to terror, he may as well have picked Katy Perry! After an hour plus of lying through his teeth about Obama's back stabbing UN deal with Israel, I noticed a peculiar habit of John's, that of sticking his tongue out to punctuate his sentences.

The above photos, not Photoshopped, were taken during about a two minute clip of Teresa and Obama's lap dog speaking.

Let's just say that if Kerry worked for me, there'd be a rolled up newspaper in his future.

Medal of Honor

Specialist Fourth Class Frank A. Herda

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sp4c. Herda (then Pfc.) distinguished himself while serving as a grenadier with Company A. Company A was part of a battalion-size night defensive perimeter when a large enemy force initiated an attack on the friendly units.
While other enemy elements provided diversionary fire and indirect weapons fire to the west, a sapper force of approximately 30 men armed with hand grenades and small charges attacked Company A's perimeter from the east. As the sappers were making a last, violent assault, 5 of them charged the position defended by Sp4c. Herda and 2 comrades, 1 of whom was wounded and lay helpless in the bottom of the foxhole. Sp4c. Herda fired at the aggressors until they were within 10 feet of his position and 1 of their grenades landed in the foxhole. He fired 1 last round from his grenade launcher, hitting 1 of the enemy soldiers in the head, and then, with no concern for his safety, Sp4c. Herda immediately covered the blast of the grenade with his body.
The explosion wounded him grievously, but his selfless action prevented his 2 comrades from being seriously injured or killed and enabled the remaining defender to kill the other sappers. By his gallantry at the risk of his life in the highest traditions of the military service, Sp4c. Herda has reflected great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Specialist Herda: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Hat tip Home of Heroes

There are seventy five living MoH recipients today. Their names and their stories should not be forgotten. My mission is to honor one of those heroes here each week, and salute them for their courage and sacrifice. In the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy:

Quote du jour

The thing about “mere symbols”...is that they represent “mere ideas,” and “mere ideas” are the backbone of "mere humanity." In the case of the flag, we’re talking about ideas that are wrapped into the Constitution – a document that separates us from every other country on the planet.
Mere ideas are the reason people fight and die. Mere ideas are the reason we’re allowed to speak freely, protest publicly, bear arms, and burn the very symbol that represents those very freedoms. I didn’t suggest that you or anyone else be denied your right to fly or burn whatever flag you wish. What I failed to do, is quietly accept behavior I don’t care for. Which, if I’m not mistaken, is the same compulsion that motivates others to publicly express themselves in whatever ways they choose.

Almost Forgot...

I first heard this song when the 45 single was delivered to the college radio station where I was working.

From Shawn's website: "The Christmas Song was written in a hotel room in Rome, in 1969. I can't remember what I was in Rome for, but it was close to Christmas, and I started thinking about that, and all that entailed, and I wanted to tell the story somewhat differently, and make it fun. A few months later, when we were recording Second Contribution, I played the song for Jonathan Weston, and he didn't want to waste any of the studio time we had. I was determined to get it on tape. So when he and the engineer Robin Cable went out for a dinner break, I got on the phone, and gathered together 19 musicians, and I had everyone of them set up with microphones, and had the levels set, we'd rehearsed it several times, and we were sitting in the studio, and then Jonathan, and Robin walked into the control room. I just told Robin to roll the tape. It was done in the first take."

On the recording, there's a bit of a false start. Shawn gives an infectious, joyous laugh and says "I think that's tremendous" and then launches into the song. I think I love that laughter as much as I love the song.

I posted the song in 2010. I wasn't going to post it again, but then I got an Anonymous comment on that 2010 post that made me change my mind. Let me share it with you...

I have been trying to figure out who did this song and what it was called. Thanks a million. I would also like to find the version with the false start, but I can't find the title "A Christmas Song" on Itunes, but I'm willing to sample each song to find it! I had googled "I think that's tremendous" before, but since it wasn't that unique a sentence, I got nowhere. Even adding christmas music to the search came up dry, and I eventually stopped trying. But I was looking for something else, thought I'd give it another try, and here you are. Thanks a million more times.

I can identify with that. I can think of things that I searched and searched for and pretty much given up hope of ever finding. And then, for some reason, a spark of hope wells up within you and tells you you've got nothing to lose by looking one more time, and...there it is.

"I think that's tremendous". I do, too. More now than ever. I don't always comment on the videos I post, but I did on this one, six years ago, and mentioned the very words that weren't in the video I posted then, the only ones our friend here knew to search for. What is it the Good Book says? Seek and ye shall find"?

I don't know what you're looking for this Christmas, but maybe it's too soon to give up looking for it now. You just never know!

Merry Christmas to you and yours! God bless us every one!
