Captain Wesley L. Fox

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as commanding officer of Company A, in action against the enemy in the northern A Shau Valley. Capt. (then 1st Lt.) Fox's company came under intense fire from a large well concealed enemy force. Capt. Fox maneuvered to a position from which he could assess the situation and confer with his platoon leaders. As they departed to execute the plan he had devised, the enemy attacked and Capt. Fox was wounded along with all of the other members of the command group, except the executive officer. Capt. Fox continued to direct the activity of his company. Advancing through heavy enemy fire, he personally neutralized 1 enemy position and calmly ordered an assault against the hostile emplacements. He then moved through the hazardous area coordinating aircraft support with the activities of his men. When his executive officer was mortally wounded, Capt. Fox reorganized the company and directed the fire of his men as they hurled grenades against the enemy and drove the hostile forces into retreat. Wounded again in the final assault, Capt. Fox refused medical attention, established a defensive posture, and supervised the preparation of casualties for medical evacuation. His indomitable courage, inspiring initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger inspired his marines to such aggressive action that they overcame all enemy resistance and destroyed a large bunker complex. Capt. Fox's heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps, and uphold the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Capt. Fox: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Quote du jour

I don’t think there’s going to be much dispute that chanting that you want to see cops dead is a terrible, terrible idea. If the protesters denouncing the New York City Police Department want to be regarded as something beyond violent anarchist scum, they’ll have to -- no pun intended -- police their own. When somebody starts chanting that they want dead cops, if you’re a protester with an ounce of sense, you have to stand up to that. This movement likes to claim that when it comes to police misbehavior, “silence equals consent.” That would apply to the violence of this anti-police movement, as well.

Quote du jour

Yes, the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown are unfortunate and worthy of discussion, but will Chuck Todd and the rest of the chattering classes spare a moment to address the deaths of Scott Patrick, Joseph Dunn, Michael Pimentel, Geniel Amaro-Fantauzzi, Daryl Pierson, Nickolaus Schultz, Jason Harwood, Joseph Matuskovic, Bryon Dickson, Michael Norris, Joe Naylor, Danny Oliver, Michael Davis, Eugene Kostiuchenko, Jesse Valdez, Shaun Diamond, David Payne, Robert White, Matthew Chism, Justin Winebrenner, Christopher Smith, and Edwin Roman-Acevedo?

Who are these men, you ask, and what happened to them? They are the 22 American police officers murdered just since the day Eric Garner died. There were 33 others killed earlier in the year. Don’t look for any of their widows to appear on Meet the Press.

Predictions for 2014 - The Year in Review

Last December, I made my annual predictions for 2014. Aside from the purely humorous (and mildly outrageous) ones, think I did pretty well. I missed the Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear program (unless it was so covert no one heard about it). I predicted the Dems would lose the Senate, but I underestimated the margin, and the Winter Olympics survived.

I still have a few days to change my mind, but I don't think I'm doing predictions for 2015. Too depressing. The list as it appeared Dec. 31, 2013:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Those of you waiting with bated breath for someone to make predictions about the coming year are in luck. Not about the coming year, of course, that will still suck or get suckier.

++ Obama's signature accomplishment, Obamacare, will continue to be his bane in 2014. The administration will lose at least one court case challenging the President's authority to arbitrarily make changes in the law.

++ Millions more will be cancelled from their current insurance plans than sign up at the federal exchanges.

++ Israel will stage an attack, overt or covert, on Iranian nuclear facilities

++ Edward Snowden will not be offered amnesty by the US...unless he dons a serape and enters the US from the south, across the Rio Grande.

++ Amnesty for illegals (by another name) will be an election year topic. Anything to change the conversation from Obamacare

++ In January, thousands of conversations in doctors' offices will take place, in which the second thing said will be either: "What do you mean I don't have insurance?" or "How high did you say my deductible is??"

++ Also in January, Obama will once again arbitrarily (and illegally) suspend at least one more provision of the "passed by Congress, law of the land, Supreme Court approved, signed by the President" Unaffordable Healthcare Act

++ Ex Congressman Anthony Weiner will market a line of Tofu hot dogs. Bun length.

++ In February, Debbie Wassermann Schultz will still be telling people that the only problem with Obamacare is the website.

++ The twerk will leave as quickly as it came

++ "If you like your _____, you can keep it" will be a cheap and easy laugh line all throughout 2014

++ The 29 hour work week will become the de facto standard for the majority of new hires in 2014

++ The New York Times will come out with an editorial explaining that Obama was not responsible for Obamacare, rather it was an obscure video by Michael Moore

++ Underestimating the nation's anger over Obamacare and the lies told to sell it, Democrats will not only not retake the House, but will narrowly lose the Senate. 52-48

++ There will be a terrorist attack on the Russian Winter Olympics severe enough to make several countries withdraw from the games.

++ Gun control advocates will make a major push in 2014. Look for it to become a major campaign topic as well, as Democrats running from the President and Obamacare try to further their careers on the backs of dead children.

++ The sale of long guns in California will slow for the first time during the Obama administration, as new gun registration laws take effect. (After having made record sales in December)

++ Obama will confess in an interview with Barbara Walters, that his interest in watching the series "Breaking Bad" is to help him explore employment opportunities in 2017

++ Interest rates will begin creeping up, negating any real growth in the economy.

++ Because of the state of the economy, Michelle will limit her taxpayer expensed vacations to no more than six. Or eight. No more than twelve!

++ China will continue expansion of its blue water navy and will continue their quest for territorial expansion

++ Fukushima will market it's own brand of glow-in-the-dark sushi*

++ More witnesses to the Benghazi attacks will come forward to testify, sparking new Congressional hearings**

++ Detroit falls from first to second largest city in the country to declare bankruptcy. Detroit mayor vows not to give up fight. Stockton, CA changes the banners for their Asparagus Festival to "We're Number Three!"

++ Ex Congressman Anthony Weiner will market a line of smart phones with a macro lens to take ultra close ups. It will be called the "Big Macro Daddy"

++ Eric Holder will indict Will Ferrell for ostentatious osculation and suspicion of being a thespian. ***

++ Obama will play another 40-50 rounds of golf (No. Seriously.)

++ Joe Biden will say something really stupid. (C'mon! That's a "gimme"!)

++ Al Gore will fly in a private jet, met by a limousine (with the motor left running to keep the car comfortable), to make a speech on how much we need to cutback our lifestyle to save the planet.

++ If one more "selfie" of Barry and some blonde babe shows up on the Internet, Michelle gets half the House (and a third of the Senate)

and finally...

++ Liberal trolls will still be clueless.

That's it for now! If you think this is easy, leave your own predictions in the comments and we'll check back here next year to see who did better? I double dog dare you! Heh.

*Just to see if you're paying attention!

**Really hadn't thought much about Benghazi in these predictions, but a clueless Internet troll seemed to expect at least one. This one's for you, Ema!

***This will be dismissed for lack of evidence.

Captain Robert F. Foley

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Foley's company was ordered to extricate another company of the battalion. Moving through the dense jungle to aid the besieged unit, Company A encountered a strong enemy force occupying well concealed, defensive positions, and the company's leading element quickly sustained several casualties. Capt. Foley immediately ran forward to the scene of the most intense action to direct the company's efforts. Deploying 1 platoon on the flank, he led the other 2 platoons in an attack on the enemy in the face of intense fire. During this action both radio operators accompanying him were wounded. At grave risk to himself he defied the enemy's murderous fire, and helped the wounded operators to a position where they could receive medical care. As he moved forward again 1 of his machinegun crews was wounded. Seizing the weapon, he charged forward firing the machinegun, shouting orders and rallying his men, thus maintaining the momentum of the attack. Under increasingly heavy enemy fire he ordered his assistant to take cover and, alone, Capt. Foley continued to advance firing the machinegun until the wounded had been evacuated and the attack in this area could be resumed. When movement on the other flank was halted by the enemy's fanatical defense, Capt. Foley moved to personally direct this critical phase of the battle. Leading the renewed effort he was blown off his feet and wounded by an enemy grenade. Despite his painful wounds he refused medical aid and persevered in the forefront of the attack on the enemy redoubt. He led the assault on several enemy gun emplacements and, single-handedly, destroyed 3 such positions. His outstanding personal leadership under intense enemy fire during the fierce battle which lasted for several hours, inspired his men to heroic efforts and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the operation. Capt. Foley's magnificent courage, selfless concern for his men and professional skill reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Captain Foley: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

The Gift of the Magi 2014 (or Adventures in ER Land)

For anyone not acquainted with O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi", stop what you are doing and go straight here, and do not come back until you have finished it. You will not regret it. If are you familiar with it, but haven't read it in a long time, same goes for you. This will still be here when you get back.

I had a precious little gift of my own last week: an all expense paid visit to the ER! I was going to write about it last Friday and then the horrific murder of two policeman changed the focus of what I wanted to say. But, the players remain the same: two of Stockton's finest in blue, ER docs, representative of the evil, non government hospital, in white, a homeless man, and a keen observer of the human condition. (Okay, he was kicked out of the ER for loitering and then it was just up to me to take notes.)

It was the first time I'd been to an ER during the week, when things are relatively quiet. Typically, I'd be there on a weekend, like everybody else, because I didn't have access to my regular physician, and, well, it was an emergency. In fact, I had a great deal of déjà vu in driving myself there. Just before I moved to Ohio, I had driven myself to the very same ER, with a rapidly beating heart and pains in my left arm. The pain in my arm, it turned out, was coincidental to all the packing and moving I was doing, but, because that and my first ever bout with A-fib, I got moved to the front of a very long line of folk in the ER that weekend.

This time, there were may be a dozen people there, and a lot of them were friends and families of those actually needing medical treatment, still, there was a lot of "hurry up and wait". I didn't mind, since I was familiar with how the triage system works and my injuries were far from life threatening this time, so I waited. And waited. USW*

After waiting in one place, they invited me to wait in another, this time on a gurney in the hallway. So, I waited a little more. They had some of those portable curtain screens around, but there wasn't much call for them. Then, a couple of Stockton's finest and a couple of docs escorted this guy with no pants to sit on the gurney closest to mine. I tried not to eavesdrop, but by this time I was ready to read soup labels for entertainment.

It was apparently a homeless guy. Straight out of Central Casting, he had long scraggly hair and a long unkempt beard...and no pants. From what I was able to piece together his story, he'd been brought to the hospital four days before with some kind of seizure. His clothing and meager possessions had been stuffed into a plastic bag, per hospital policy. And now, he wanted to leave. Apparently in no uncertain terms he wanted to leave. My guess is, that he raised some kind of ruckus with the nurses, which explained the presence of the two police officers, who did not bring him in but were called because of the nature and volume of his impending departure.

The police officers both drew their night sticks and beat him mercilessly, shouting racial epithets in rhythm with the blows. Of course not. BTW, I haven't mentioned anyone's race or gender here (besides the homeless guy), and won't. It's irrelevant. The police and the doctors both explained that they could not keep him here against his will, but they were concerned for his well being after he leaves the hospital. It was remarked that he was weak, and could hardly walk, had no residence to return to, but he insisted he wanted to go to a "friend's house".

The police were there to ensure the safety of the staff, in case this gentleman went beyond violent outbursts to violent action. There were also there to see to his well being, and convince him, if they could, to stay under the hospital's care until he was better equipped to handle things on his own.

Let me remind you at this point, that the man was homeless. He had no insurance. He had no money to pay, yet here this money grubbing, non-government hospital who might charge you $20 for a pack of Pampers was offering to let this man, who had been with them for four days, without paying a cent, to stay for an indefinite time longer.

No one has to go without health care in America.

But, he'd made up his mind. In a way, I can't blame him. I'd been there for four hours and pretty much had seen everything I wanted to. He'd been there four days. He determined to go, against doctor's recommendation. His bare feet were stuck in running shoes. "Could we give you a pair of socks?" they asked, and someone went off running to fetch him a pair of socks. This was Winter in California. Maybe forty degrees outside. Not bad by comparison to much of the country, but then, most of the country has some place to go home to.

It was around 11:30 AM. "How about lunch? Can we get you something to eat before you go?" Again, one of the orderlies was dispatched to find the man something to eat, that he could take with him.

So now he had fresh, clean dry socks, lunch, courtesy of the hospital and, did I mention he wasn't wearing pants? In California in the winter time, it doesn't snow through much of the state, but it does rain. We'd been having a number of big rainstorms lately, and when he was brought in, he'd been brought in soaking wet. And his pants? Put into the plastic bag in the condition they were brought in. Wet. They hadn't gotten any drier or cleaner in the last four days. So now, he has clean dry socks, a meal and wet pants to go off walking about in 40 to 50 degree weather.

After a brief discussion of the feasibility of laundering his clothes, it was another command decision: "Can we get him a pair of hospital pants?" And again, someone provided him with, shall we say, less than ideal winter wear...thin and hardly fashionable, but clean and dry. They put the partitions around him to give him a little privacy while he dressed.

"Where does your friend live?" The guy was a little vague. I suspect his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor, if you know what I mean. The doctor says, "Let me get you a bus pass. Here's two. I don't want you to have to do a lot of walking."

The elderly gentleman thanked him and they escorted him as far as the parking lot, clutching his meager possessions, his lunch and sporting a snazzy blue pair of pants. A hard life just got a tiny bit easier, for a while, anyway. Thanks in large part to the kind of hospital that Barack Obama would do away with. Thanks in part to a couple of police officers who wanted to make sure that this individual did not harm himself or anyone else.

The next time some hospital bills you $24 for a box of Kleenex you could have picked up at Costco for a buck, just remember that the excess isn't necessarily going towards the head doctor's next Lexus payment. It helps cover the costs of those who pay nothing at all, like our friend here. The gifts of the Magi were clean socks, and a lunch and some crummy blue pants, given in the Spirit of Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all!

Oh, and me? Hurt my arm. Tore something. Very painful, but nothing I can't handle. Will be typing with one hand for the foreseeable future. Thanks for asking! (You know you were!)

Those Who Sow to the Wind Will Reap the Whirlwind

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This sweet vignette of liberal love and tolerance bore fruit today, as two police officers were shot by a lowlife thug from Baltimore, who set out to kill policemen, regardless of who they were or how diligently they performed their duties, simply because they had both taken the oath to 'protect and serve'.

The two officers were stationed outside a housing project, in a predominantly African American neighborhood, that had been plagued by violent crime. To all of you semi-deranged folks who think that somehow these two "got what was coming to them", tell me, do you think that the people in that housing project will be more safe or less safe after these two murders?

One Tweeter remarked:
"I truly don't care that cops just got shot in head in NYC. It'll take drastic measures to change a racist nation that murders its citizens."

Newsflash: Policemen are citizens, too. Your indifference to the murder of these two officers is supposedly fueled by a perceived indifference to the lives of young black men. How are you any different from the people you criticize and oppose? If indifference to human life is a bad thing, how does your becoming what you say is evil make you any less evil?

I was thinking too, how, after the shooting of Gabby Giffords, some liberals started piling on Sarah Palin, for having published a map that had bullseyes on certain congressional districts, as having incited violence. How much more then, did the goose stepping crowds chanting that they wanted "dead police, now", incite violence against these two policemen?

Blazing Diplomacy

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fans of "Blazing Saddles" will remember Cleavon Little as the sheriff taking himself hostage. That was the impression that fist came to my mind after hearing President Obama's plan to normalize relations with Communist Cuba.

But, did the President take himself hostage? Just his credibility (if there were any left!) Step into the Wayback Machine with me to 2009:
President Obama marked his 100th day in office Wednesday by holding a prime-time news conference from the White House. Obama said the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding was torture...
OBAMA: What I’ve said — and I will repeat — is that waterboarding violates our ideals and our values. I do believe that it is torture. I don’t think that’s just my opinion; that’s the opinion of many who’ve examined the topic. And that’s why I put an end to these practices.

At the very beginning of his presidency, Obama made known his erroneous and disparaging views on enhanced interrogation, falsely calling it torture, which has specific meaning and connotation around the planet, casting the 'land of the free and the home of the brave' as being morally equivalent with nations that practice genuine torture.

There was much public debate about the subject in 2009. A number of reporters volunteered to be waterboarded, (more reporters were waterboarded than terrorists, it turns out!) The lines were drawn. The Left disparaged everything George W. Bush did, so there was no reasoning with them. The furor eventually died down and people were soon inundated with a barrage of scandals, economic malaise and foreign policy debacles unabated by a White House obsessed with celebrities and golf, with an occasional funeral selfie.

Suddenly, after five years of being a non-issue, the lamest of lame duck partisan Senate committees under Dianne Feinstein, felt compelled to revisit the issue. They had to act with alacrity, since in January, adults would take over in the US Senate and such partisan claptrap would never see the light of day.

And then, mirabile dictu, after bringing the issue back into the limelight and into the nation's consciousness once again, Barack Obama announces that despite all the hand wringing and faux outrage shown towards the US for enhanced interrogation techniques, that he would seek to normalize relations with a brutal dictatorship known for torturing and killing political prisoners.

Desperately in search of a legacy, Barack will not let the lack of a consistent and rational foreign policy on his part, or the utter hypocrisy of his positions, deter him from giving aid and assistance to our enemies and their allies.

Quote du jour

It’s also important to note that, as most any police officer will tell you, everyone who has been manhandled to the ground as Garner was complains that he can’t breathe. It’s when someone stops saying it that officers need to guard against the risk of positional asphyxia by moving him into a position that allows for unimpaired breathing. If this was not done, or was not done quickly enough, it would be a lapse exposing the NYPD to a claim of civil liability, but it would not mean that the force used to subdue Garner was excessive or unwarranted.

Captain James P. Fleming

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Fleming (then 1st Lt.) distinguished himself as the Aircraft Commander of a UH-1F transport Helicopter. Capt. Fleming went to the aid of a 6-man special forces long range reconnaissance patrol that was in danger of being overrun by a large, heavily armed hostile force. Despite the knowledge that 1 helicopter had been downed by intense hostile fire, Capt. Fleming descended, and balanced his helicopter on a river bank with the tail boom hanging over open water. The patrol could not penetrate to the landing site and he was forced to withdraw. Dangerously low on fuel, Capt. Fleming repeated his original landing maneuver. Disregarding his own safety, he remained in this exposed position. Hostile fire crashed through his windscreen as the patrol boarded his helicopter. Capt. Fleming made a successful takeoff through a barrage of hostile fire and recovered safely at a forward base. Capt. Fleming's profound concern for his fellowmen, and at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Air Force and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country.

Captain Fleming: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Hat tip Home of Heroes

There are fewer than a hundred living MoH recipients today. Their names and their stories should not be forgotten. My mission is to honor one of those heroes here each week, and salute them for their courage and sacrifice. In the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy:

“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors; the men it remembers.”
