**Did I mention I've been in Canada all week??? Yeah, they have the Internets here, too, eh? But I haven't had hardly any time to myself. So, we're a little heavy on the Rule Five and a little light on the political this week. I may be able to update this between now and Sunday, so, check back for more. In the meantime, check out this week's poll on Obama and Syria.

My new luggage tag to screw with TSA and Customs

As last we left our intrepid correspondent, he was headed for a "fashionably late" dinner, the irony of that statement will become apparent in time! There is a restaurant within walking distance of my hotel, and sometimes it's easier to take a crap shoot on the food, just to get out of getting back in the car and driving again. So I set off on foot to a restaurant called the White Spot. (Yes, I know you liberals are chortling with the notion that because I am a conservative male, I would look for a "white spot".)

The sign said some about the restaurant being "legend"...wait for it! "dairy"...legendary! My own experience was that legend has it someone went there to eat and was served...on the same night! Under the sign, it said "Since 1928". I assume that that is the longest anyone has ever waited to be served there, but that too, seems rather "conservative".

Upon entering, no one was to be seen who actually admitted to working at the restaurant. (Who could blame them?) I waited for several minutes before someone finally wandered up to the front of the restaurant, followed shortly by my "late" waitress. As they walked me back into the restaurant, they asked me where I wanted to sit. I told them I didn't much care, because I was 'pretty easy going'. Yes. I actually said that. (Mistake #2)

I was seated, the waitress handed me a menu and was back shortly to ask if I wanted to start out with a drink. Seeing as how I'd had this HUGE mug of a local red ale with my dinner the night before, I opted for a margarita, seeing as how there were several on the menu.

"Sorry! The machine's broken." This, despite having a fully stocked bar and bartender, and the notion that blenders are not completely unknown in the Great White North. "Okay. Give me a minute", says I, and off she went. Legend has it that she was kidnapped by gypsies who would eventually make her their queen. Others say, she merely died of old age. Perhaps, she too, was waiting on another employee of the White Spot?

After more minutes than I care to count, switching my lack of attention between a tennis match on half the big screen TVs and a hockey game on the others, I left. No one said anything to me on the way out. They may not have even noticed yet that I am no longer there.

I may be the next part of the "legend": the customer they almost served!

The fundamental problem of the political Left seems to be that the real world does not fit their preconceptions. Therefore they see the real world as what is wrong, and what needs to be changed, since apparently their preconceptions cannot be wrong.

Captain James A. Taylor

Citation:

Capt. Taylor, Armor, was serving as executive officer of Troop B, 1st Squadron. His troop was engaged in an attack on a fortified position west of Que Son when it came under intense enemy recoilless rifle, mortar, and automatic weapons fire from an enemy strong point located immediately to its front. One armored cavalry assault vehicle was hit immediately by recoilless rifle fire and all 5 crewmembers were wounded. Aware that the stricken vehicle was in grave danger of exploding, Capt. Taylor rushed forward and personally extracted the wounded to safety despite the hail of enemy fire and exploding ammunition. Within minutes a second armored cavalry assault vehicle was hit by multiple recoilless rifle rounds. Despite the continuing intense enemy fire, Capt. Taylor moved forward on foot to rescue the wounded men from the burning vehicle and personally removed all the crewmen to the safety of a nearby dike. Moments later the vehicle exploded. As he was returning to his vehicle, a bursting mortar round painfully wounded Capt. Taylor, yet he valiantly returned to his vehicle to relocate the medical evacuation landing zone to an area closer to the front lines. As he was moving his vehicle, it came under machinegun fire from an enemy position not 50 yards away. Capt. Taylor engaged the position with his machinegun, killing the 3-man crew. Upon arrival at the new evacuation site, still another vehicle was struck. Once again Capt. Taylor rushed forward and pulled the wounded from the vehicle, loaded them aboard his vehicle, and returned them safely to the evacuation site. His actions of unsurpassed valor were a source of inspiration to his entire troop, contributed significantly to the success of the overall assault on the enemy position, and were directly responsible for saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military profession and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Capt. Taylor: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

The Edmonton Diaries, Continued

Continuing the saga of my adventures in the Great Frozen North, we seek out those culinary treasures unknown in the lower 48:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Cuites à La Marmite? Sounds vaguely like something they might have fed your great grandfather in the first World War. (Personally I was attacked by a rabid Marmite when I was a younger man, and barely escaped with my life!)

Anyway, I figured I'd buy a package for the novelty sake if nothing else. Fortunately, I was spared from actually tasting it, as a Mountie in a red hazmat suit took them from me before I could open the package.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Another oddity on my sojourn, as you can see from the photo below, is a railroad caboose, high in the air, on a short bit of trestle leading nowhere. As far as I can ascertain, this was done for "No Apparent Reason", which I have come to believe is the Canadian national motto. Canadians, or "Cans" as they like to call themselves, seem to employ this methodology constantly. Anyone else see the irony of the "Future of Safety" represented by an obsolete railroad car, suspended three stories above your head??

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The next oddity may or may not be universally Canadian. It may just be confined to Edmonton, where the local residents, or "Eddies" as they call themselves, have an inexplicable lack of storage places for their house cats. How else do you explain the presence of this particular button on the dashboard of my rental car?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

People unable to fold their own cats? Unwilling?? Too lazy??? Then what do you do with them? Pop them in the glove box? Fit them in the trunk with the luggage for your vacation?? It's a mystery, eh?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Time for a fashionably late dinner, where I can observe the Eddies and the Cans in their natural habitat...

On the Road, Again...eh?

One of the reasons why people come here, day after day, no doubt, is to learn at the feet of an international traveler, bon vivant and raconteur, all those details and nuances that may otherwise escape the common man. For example, did you know that in Canada, Denny's uses a maple leaf instead of the apostrophe in their signage? I know! Mind blowing isn't it??

When it comes to haute cuisine, what is hauter than a Grand Slam from Denny's? And from the Denny's in Edmonton, Alberta, an indication that the men of the Great White North might not have the aim those of us South of the Border take for granted?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So...would those little things in the bottom of the urinal be funnel cakes in Canada? Inquiring minds want to know!!

BTW, Sex in Advertising will be live from Alberta tonight, so, set your DVRs! More later in the week, sleep deprivation notwithstanding...

Image and video hosting by TinyPicImage and video hosting by TinyPic

Staff Sergeant Kenneth E. Stumpf

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. S/Sgt. Stumpf distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader of the 3d Platoon, Company C, on a search and destroy mission. As S/Sgt. Stumpf's company approached a village, it encountered a North Vietnamese rifle company occupying a well fortified bunker complex. During the initial contact, 3 men from his squad fell wounded in front of a hostile machinegun emplacement. The enemy's heavy volume of fire prevented the unit from moving to the aid of the injured men, but S/Sgt. Stumpf left his secure position in a deep trench and ran through the barrage of incoming rounds to reach his wounded comrades. He picked up 1 of the men and carried him back to the safety of the trench. Twice more S/Sgt. Stumpf dashed forward while the enemy turned automatic weapons and machineguns upon him, yet he managed to rescue the remaining 2 wounded squad members. He then organized his squad and led an assault against several enemy bunkers from which continuously heavy fire was being received He and his squad successfully eliminated 2 of the bunker positions, but one to the front of the advancing platoon remained a serious threat. Arming himself with extra hand grenades, S/Sgt. Stumpf ran over open ground, through a volley of fire directed at him by a determined enemy, toward the machinegun position. As he reached the bunker, he threw a hand grenade through the aperture. It was immediately returned by the occupants, forcing S/Sgt. Stumpf to take cover. Undaunted, he pulled the pins on 2 more grenades, held them for a few seconds after activation, then hurled them into the position, this time successfully destroying the emplacement. With the elimination of this key position, his unit was able to assault and overrun the enemy. S/Sgt. Stumpf's relentless spirit of aggressiveness, intrepidity, and ultimate concern for the lives of his men, are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

S/Sgt. Stumpf: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Obama isn’t a “soft” totalitarian so much as a slapdash one. His apparatchiks monitor the e-mails of both Jeffrey and George Osborne, but he still can’t tell one from the other. Likewise, in Syria as in Libya, “the largest and most all-encompassing surveillance system ever invented” can’t tell a plucky freedom fighter itching to build Massachusetts in the sands of Araby from your neighborhood al-Qaeda subsidiary whose health-care plan only covers clitoridectomies.
