Herman Cain Wins Presidential Straw Poll in Phoenix

Herman Cain wins Tea Party presidential live straw poll at Phoenix summit

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And, although most straw polls are worth every bit as much straw as you can take away from them, this one is interesting!

Which Republican should become the next president? Herman Cain, according to a number of Tea Party activists gathered at a weekend summit in Phoenix.

Cain, a conservative talk show host and former Godfather's Pizza chief executive, won the American Policy Summit's presidential live straw poll on Sunday. Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas won the summit's online poll. The survey is a chance for conservative activists gathered on the last day of the Tea Party Patriots conference to name their favorite presidential picks.

Cain won nearly 22 percent of the nearly 1,600 votes cast. Paul won nearly half the votes cast by more than 2,300 online registered attendees. "The mood at this summit shows that Tea Party activists are looking for leaders who share our principles of fiscal responsibility and limited government and who will vow to uphold policies that reflect those principles once in office," said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots.

"Mr. Cain and Rep. Paul's positions resonated with Tea Party Patriots this weekend and the straw poll indicates the enthusiasm for these strong conservatives," said Mark Meckler, the Patriots' other national coordinator.

I'd make some snarky remark about how Ron Paul's supporters somehow always manage to put him in first place on Internet polls, no matter how little actual support he has, but I already did!

"Move On" Whistles by the Graveyard - "Wow"

Some of you new to Proof Positive may not know it, by I am a member of "Move On dot Org". I know I'm a member, because they keep telling me I am! (Typically, before they ask me for more money.)From their latest email:

Dear MoveOn member,
Wow. The energy around today's Rallies to Save the American Dream has exploded in the last 36 hours.

What started as just an idea on Tuesday morning has turned into 30,000 people signed up to attend the Rallies to Save the American Dream in 66 cities—including every state capital.

It'll be an amazing show of solidarity with the people of Wisconsin. And it'll put the right-wing on notice that we're fired up and ready to take them on united, as a nationwide movement.
(emphasis mine)

See. This is why I think that Moooove On appeals more to the typically math impaired liberal (but, I repeat myself). The "explosion" you just heard was more like a Greenie Stickem cap* that was left in your jeans, after your Mom washed them.

Thirty thousand people in sixty six cities works out to about 454 people per city. Imagine four hundred and fifty of your neighbors rallying for anything in your fair city. Unless the population of your town is five thousand or less, I'm thinking that's not much of an "explosion". If all 30,000 of them were in one city, like New York or L.A., it might be newsworthy, but still not that big a deal! And that's "signed up", that's not even "shown up" yet.

To quote my estimable friends in Mooove oN (in my best Ben Stein impression): "Wow". Color me unimpressed.

Update: FYI, 30,000 people in a population of 308.7 million is .00971%
Less than one tenth of one percent. Again: Wow.

Obama's Magical Misdirection Tour

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The big story today is about the Obama administration's turn about on defending the Defense of Marriage Act. In my opinion, this is little more than misdirection.

In a week where Obama's strongest union allies have not only been exposed as busting the budgets through outrageous salaries and benefits, but also their ugly intransigence over the prospect of having to share even the merest fraction of the suffering of the taxpayers who support them, has not put liberals in a good light. Add to this the continuing debacle of Obama's foreign policy (or lack thereof), in being AWOL on Libya, the murder of American citizens on the high seas, (two years after Obama became keenly aware of the problem), the rising cost of energy, high levels of unemployment, and what do you have from the White House to show the smallest modicum of leadership?

Ooh! Look over there! Gay marriage!

Regardless of what Obama does or does not think about the merits or Constitutionality of either gay marriage or the DOMA, with all the things on his plate, on what planet does opening up a new can of worms show leadership? I think that this is nothing more than a smoke screen to stir up the social conservatives with an issue they feel more strongly about than some of the others*.

The Supreme Court can determine the Constitutionality of DOMA. The Leader of the Free World needs to exhibit some leadership. Sooner, rather than later.

*Update: It is also a sop to certain segments of his own base, which I gather are none too pleased with the overall performance of Team Obama to date, either.

To the Shores of Tripoli, Anyone?

Remember about two years ago, when the captain of the Maersk Alabama was rescued from pirates by Navy SEALS? According to the White House, Obama was on top of and directing the whole operation. They made it sound like Barry had the Navy SEAL Commander on the speakerphone in the Oval Office, and when the time came, the CinC told them to "take the shot".

There are those, however, who said that Obama's rules of engagement (ROE), in refusing to authorize deployment of the SEAL team for 36 hours, turning down a number of plans to rescue the captain, and then only allowed action if the hostage's life was in "immanent" danger. Are those ROE still in effect?

What has the US done to curtail the piracy of US vessels in international waters? Damned little, apparently. And now, four more Americans are dead. Hundreds of hostages and dozens of ships are currently being held.

And whether these are Muslim Maritime Marauders or simple searat terrorists, a projection of power is in order, particularly for ships flying the American flag. Naval power.

Whether an overt show of force, or a sting designed to lure the pirates in and introduce them to Davy Jones personally, the US should be taking the lead in doing it.

Maybe if the President spoke with the Secretary of the Navy as often as he does the President of the AFL-CIO, something more would have been done by now?

First Lieutenant James L. Stone

Citation:

1st Lt. Stone, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and indomitable courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. When his platoon, holding a vital outpost position, was attacked by overwhelming Chinese forces, 1st Lt. Stone stood erect and exposed to the terrific enemy fire calmly directed his men in the defense. A defensive flame-thrower failing to function, he personally moved to its location, further exposing himself, and personally repaired the weapon. Throughout a second attack, 1st Lt. Stone; though painfully wounded, personally carried the only remaining light machinegun from place to place in the position in order to bring fire upon the Chinese advancing from 2 directions. Throughout he continued to encourage and direct his depleted platoon in its hopeless defense. Although again wounded, he continued the fight with his carbine, still exposing himself as an example to his men. When this final overwhelming assault swept over the platoon's position his voice could still be heard faintly urging his men to carry on, until he lost consciousness. Only because of this officer's driving spirit and heroic action was the platoon emboldened to make its brave but hopeless last ditch stand.

1st Lt. Stone: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Seven Year Old Charged With Crime for Toy Gun at School

From the zero tolerance equals zero common sense department:

A 7-year-old child allegedly shot a Nerf-style toy gun in his Hammonton, N.J., school Jan. 18. No one was hurt, but the pint-size softshooter now faces misdemeanor criminal charges.

Hammonton Police began an investigation into the “suspicious activity” at the Hammonton Early Childhood Education Center Jan. 18 after school officials alerted them to the incident.

The "gun" the child brought to school was a $5 toy gun, similar to a Nerf gun, that shoots soft ping pong type balls, according to the school's superintendent.

Hello? Any adults at this school? When a kid brings a toy to school, any toy that he's not supposed to have, you take it away from him and then either give it back at the end of the day or make his parent come in to claim it. You don't call the cops!!!

...Police charged the 7-year-old with possessing an imitation firearm in or on an education institution – a misdemeanor and a minor juvenile offense in New Jersey.

Are you telling me that the police have nothing better to do in New Jersey than to bring seven year olds into the criminal justice system for bringing the wrong toy to school? Sheesh!

Obama Administration: No Transparency "In the Paint"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Coach Obama takes a break from drills to demonstrate his mad shadow puppet skills.

A little noticed story about a father and his girl's basketball team was in the news recently. Barack Obama stepped in to substitute for an absent basketball coach.

Saturday morning the president left the oval office pressure cooker and stepped onto the basketball court to fill in for the absent coach of his daughter Sasha’s basketball team. Even though his daughters and the first lady took were in Colorado on a skiing trip, the president decided he was needed, and stepped in to fill the coach’s shoes. If he couldn’t fix the country’s problems in one morning at least he could paint smiles on the faces of a group of nine-year-olds.

The game was held at a community centre in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where the president and the first lady often go Saturday mornings to watch Sasha play basketball. Reports say this was the first time the president has filled in for the team’s coach. Reporters are banned from going inside the community centre, so no word on how successful his coaching methods were. But a man with a whole country’s welfare on his shoulders should be able to handle a group of nine-year-olds….right?

Reporters weren't allowed in. That's responsible. No need for all these budding female athletes to be distracted by the photographers and scribes of the Washington Press corps. (BTW, Mr. President, that's pronounced "core", not "corpse".)

But presidential aides refused to release the score of the game after it was ended. Why do I suspect that if Sasha's team had won, we'd hear about it for the next two years?

Happy Presidents' Day!

Trading comments on the Friday Night Babe post this last week, I got to thinking about some of the songs I liked that were either used as theme songs or written especially for television. So, until I run out of them or get tired of them, I'm going to take a little walk down memory lane to some of the shows we liked that helped shape the face of television and the theme music that set the tone for them. Rep. David Wu's staff confronted him over concerns about his mental health

WASHINGTON -- Three days before the Nov. 2 election, U.S. Rep. David Wu’s most loyal and senior staffers were so alarmed by his erratic behavior that they demanded he enter a hospital for psychiatric treatment.

Three days before the election, the people closest to him were "demanding he enter a hospital for psychiatric treatment"? And, doing their public duty, called a press conference to warn the general public about what they knew and feared? (Stop laughing!)

No public announcement was made, but campaign staff withdrew and Wu did not hold another formal campaign event until he emerged on Tuesday night after winning a seventh term.

"He may be a nutzoid whackadoo, but he's our nutzoid whackadoo." party officials were quoted as saying. (Okay. I made that part up!)

He later called in his employees and reprimanded them for blowing things out of proportion and accused the predominantly female staff of being overly emotional...
So, he's not only mentally unstable, he's also a misogynist? Great! Isn't that the picture of the proto-typical anti-feminist? "Don't you worry your pretty little head about it, Little Missy! It's probably just your Aunt Flo talking!" Nice guy!

...Wu had shown signs of erratic behavior before. In 2007, he accused the Bush White House of acting like fake Klingons. In 2003, he appeared to go catatonic before a crucial vote on Medicare.

"Hypocrisy, Thy Name is Pelosi"

No Sheeples here (with an excellent graphic representation of San Fran Nan), points to a Politico post that quotes former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (Gosh! I just never get tired of saying that!) thusly:

Pelosi told reporters Friday that the protests are “an extraordinary show of democracy in action.”

NSH: superimposes Nancy over a protester carrying a sign with a swastika and the Wisconsin governor pictured with a Hitler mustache. What????

Isn't Nancy Pelosi the one who had a cow (no disrespect to cows intended) when a Tea Party activist carried a sign with a swastika with a slash through it?

Translation for brain dead liberals (but I repeat myself): When you put the international symbol of a red circle with a diagonal slash over something, you indicate that it is NOT allowed.

The protesters, many of whom lied and called in sick so that they could rally in the streets, with ringers brought in from out of state to make their support appear greater than it actually is (another form of lie), have Nancy's full support, even though they brought real swastikas with them. No slash.

You Can Take the Community Organizer out of the Community, but You Can't Take the Community Organization out of the Community Organizer

by the Left Coast Rebel

Isn't it amazing to see the same guy who has constantly railed against the banksters, business and Wall Street, now standing 100% behind groups across the nation that fleece local, state and federal taxpayers on a 1000x magnified scale? Yes, I'm talking about America's unions and it makes me think something of our Leader:

You can take the community organizer out of the community, but you can't take the community organization agitation out of the community organizer.

The spread-the-wealth cavalry has arrived in Madison and Obama and co. sent 'em.

Washington Post:

President Obama thrust himself and his political operation this week into Wisconsin's broiling budget battle, mobilizing opposition Thursday to a Republican bill that would curb public-worker benefits while planning similar action in other state capitals.

Obama accused Scott Walker, the state's new Republican governor, of unleashing an "assault" on unions in pushing emergency legislation that would nullify collective-bargaining agreements that affect most public employees, including teachers.

The president's political machine worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals....

By the end of the day, Democratic Party officials were working to organize additional demonstrations in Ohio and Indiana, where an effort is underway to trim benefits for public workers. Some union activists predicted similar protests in Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania....

The White House political operation, Organizing for America, got involved Monday, after Democratic National Committee Chairman Timothy M. Kaine, a former Virginia governor, spoke to union leaders in Madison, a party official said.

The group made phone calls, distributed messages via Twitter and Facebook, and sent e-mails to its state and national lists to try to build crowds for rallies Wednesday and Thursday, a party official said.

Need a briefing on the basics of this story? David Boaz at Cato has a great summation of the goings-on in Madison, Wisconsin, (emphasis mine):
Newly elected Wisconsin governor Scott Walker has introduced what he calls a "budget repair" plan that would, among other things, require state employees to pay about 5.8% toward their pension (about the private sector national average) and about 12% of their healthcare benefits (about half the private sector national average) and restrict the collective bargaining powers of government-employee unions. In response, as many as 25,000 state workers and their supporters have been protesting in and around the state Capitol.
Wow, that sure sounds revolutionary, doesn't it? God forbid that state employees in Wisconsin pay 5% toward their pensions and half the national average toward their health care benefits! Talk about greed and selfishness, to think that the unions would not being willing to "pay their fair share" and do their part for the "common good" as our nation suffers from the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

Professor William Jacobson calls it correctly, "Obama acted stupidly in picking sides against taxpayers." I think that Americans are not in the mood to entertain union-thug demands and as the nation wakes from a deep, pre-bankruptcy slumber, the fury directed toward nefarious, taxpayer-fleecing public unions will be swift and just.

America stands by Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin and the good people of the Badger State that have drawn a line in the sand.

The Burying Of The Lara Logan Story: Not Even About Ethics

by guest blogger Andrew Roman
__________________

Paging genuine journalism...

Hello?

If ever there was a "cover-up" that needs to have the light of day cast upon it, this has to be it, don't you think?

An American female journalist is sexually assaulted while attempting to cover the protests in Egypt - assaulted by two hundred men, according to reports - and the incident gets practically no play in the lamestream media, most conspicuously from the news organization that sent her there. CBS actually sat on this story for five days before deciding to "officially" report it.

Keep in mind that habitual Hollywood-loser Charlie Sheen's latest foray into chemically-induced colossal stupidity attracted more media attention than Lindberg's arrival in Paris; yet, a sexual attack on a CBS news correspondent by a mob in Egypt was all but ignored ... that is, until other news outlets finally started talking about it, forcing CBS to finally acknowledge it.

But Egypt is a Muslim country. And there are narratives that need to be crafted and nurtured. There is an American President to prop up, and moral equivalencies to maintain.

The crowd that attacked Logan was characterized as a friendly one, a democracy-hungry gathering, with freedom on their minds and societal change in their sights - exactly the narrative the American lamestream media wanted. CBS even went as far as to say that Lara Logan was covering "jubilation" and "celebration" when she was attacked.

Well, thank goodness for that.

Perhaps it was inevitable that amidst the rifling through of raw footage from the protests, trying to compile as many "Obama is great!" and "Thank God for Obama" soundbites as they could find - of which there ultimately were none - the powers-that-be at CBS decided that they might actually have to report a story of evil-doings in a Muslim land.

That's what this is all about.

And don't give me that "protecting the privacy of the victim" angle as a counter-argument.

What? All of a sudden we are to believe that the dirty-laundry-loving mainstream media, willing to sell out their own grandmothers for a juicy scoop, were suddenly - magically - overcome with a bout of ethics?

(See that bridge over there?)

For those who would say that what happened to Logan has absolutely no business being reported by the news media, I would ask: If a CBS news correspondent were attacked by just ONE person at a Tea Party rally, would you feel exactly the same way?

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company F, in action against enemy aggressor forces. While accompanying a patrol en route to occupy a combat outpost forward of friendly lines, Pfc. Simanek exhibited a high degree of courage and a resolute spirit of self-sacrifice in protecting the lives of his fellow marines. With his unit ambushed by an intense concentration of enemy mortar and small-arms fire, and suffering heavy casualties, he was forced to seek cover with the remaining members of the patrol in a nearby trench line. Determined to save his comrades when a hostile grenade was hurled into their midst, he unhesitatingly threw himself on the deadly missile absorbing the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his body and shielding his fellow marines from serious injury or death. Gravely wounded as a result of his heroic action, Pfc. Simanek, by his daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of almost certain death, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

When race minstrelsy was America’s most popular form of mass entertainment, black actors would often have to pretend to be white men, who then in turn would put on the cork to play the role of the “black” coon, Sambo, or Jumping Jim Crow. Adding insult to injury, in a truly perverse and twisted example of the power of American white supremacy black vaudevillians would often pretend to be white in order to denigrate black people for the pleasures of the white gaze. …

In total, CPAC is a carnival and a roadshow for reactionary Conservatives. It is only fitting that in the great tradition of the freak show, the human zoo, the boardwalk, and the great midway world’s fairs of the 19th and 20th centuries, that there is a Borneo man, a Venus Hottentot or a tribe of cannibals from deepest darkest Africa or Papua New Guinea on display. For CPAC and the White Conservative imagination, Herman Cain and his black and brown kin are that featured attraction.

We always need a monkey in the window, for he/she reminds us of our humanity while simultaneously reinforcing a sense of our own superiority. Sadly, there are always folks who are willing to play that role because it pays so well.

"Monkey in the window"? A scum sucking liberal writing for the site "AlterNet", which I shall not link to here, trots out every racist slur they can imagine and then projects them onto conservatives. To me, this much vitriol* must be genuine and heartfelt, not imagined. This may be due in part, because they have an "alternate" reality in which black is white, right is wrong and intolerance is tolerance.

When it comes to race relations in America, and matters of racial prejudice:
The Leftie doth protest too much, methinks.

"Headless Woman Dies of Natural Causes"

I heard about this on the radio today. Link via Support your Local Gunfighter. And while it is perfectly natural to die when one's head is removed, that wasn't the case here!

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Police have identified the woman found dead inside her home Monday.

Police say 55-year-old Janice Lynn Weisman may have died of natural causes in late December or early January.

Her body was discovered near the front door inside the home. The woman's head was found in another part of the house.

Animal Control removed two dogs from inside the home which police say may have eaten parts of the body.

So, she dies alone, of natural causes, and no one is left to buy the kibble. Man's best friend or no, a fella's gotta eat!

Reporter Suffers Stroke Live on Camera

Given the miles of video tape shot and the ubiquitous camera phones with scads of digital memory, I guess it's to be expected that one day soon, every conceivable event will have been captured on video. Here is a reporter apparently having a stroke on live TV:

Know the warning signs of a stroke:
* Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
* Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
* Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
* Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
* Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you witness someone with these symptoms, get them medical attention immediately, even if they protest that they don't need it. Time is critical when treating stroke victims. If you have experienced these symptoms before and they reoccur, hie thee to a physician!

Mouse Taxidermy and the Paulbots of Doom

Because we're all about the love here at Proof Positive, and because some Ron Paul supporters with really tiny attention spans have been showing up lately, we wanted to find something that Paulbots could do after their guy gets blown out of the primaries, until the general election. What could be better than...mouse taxidermy?

Coddling Criminals Across the Pond

Having successfully disarmed most of the homeowners in Great Britain, nanny staters want to make sure the little darlings robbing your shed don't hurt themselves!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Residents in Surrey and Kent villages have been ordered by police to remove wire mesh from their windows as burglars could be injured.

Home owners in the villages of Tandridge and Tatsfield in Surrey and in Westerham, Brasted and Sundridge in Kent have said they are furious that they are being branded 'criminals' for protecting their property.

Locals had reinforced their windows with wire mesh after a series of shed thefts but were told by community police officers that the wire was 'dangerous' and could lead to criminals claiming compensation if they 'hurt themselves'.

What about the glass?? A fellow could get a nasty cut reaching through the glass he broke to get into your shed. Shouldn't the wire be there to protect the little bugger from the glass??? Or eliminate the windows altogether, just to be safe!

Maybe next, homeowners will be asked to put out cookies and milk, like they do for Santa, in case the little criminals get hungry or thirsty? Or maybe tea and crumpets?? Could the homeowner then be sued if the tea was too hot or the milk wasn't cold enough?

Ron Paul Wins Straw Poll - Gets to Keep Straw!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Over at the NYT, there's the headline: "Ron Paul Is No. 1 for 2012". Foregoing all the obvious "number one and number two" jokes, does brother Paul stand a chance in 2012?

Certainly in the conservative movement today, no one has run for president as many times from as many parties as has Ron Paul. Is he rapidly becoming the Williams Jennings Bryan or the Lyndon LaRouche of the Republican party?

Some have suggested that this latest straw poll victory may actually hurt him more than help him. I tend to agree. By bringing attention to himself this early on, people will focus on all the things they don't like about Paul and the reasons they did not support him or vote for him in the past.

And while he has a strong record for being reelected inside his district, his track record for national votes has been sadly lacking.

I don't want to rehash all the reasons that a Paul candidacy leaves me cold. I've gone over that here and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and...well, I think you get the message!

Since I don't believe that Paul has changed or moderated any of his views since then, my opinion remains the same. Certainly if he has shifted in any of his foreign policy positions, I would be happy to hear of it. But, I'm not holding my breath.

Update: On the other hand, you just have to admire anyone who is so up front with their support!

Michael Ramirez Sunday

Of all the political cartoonists, Michael Ramirez probably shows up on these pages most frequently.
His drawing are pithy and insightful and typically right on the money, like this one:

But, in addition to his political insight, he really is a great artist. Consider this one:

Is there no detail of this President's life that we should not find fascinating? A long drawn out story about which tie he was going to wear...
No wonder he acts as decisively as he does in times of crisis! Can anyone imagine Reagan dithering over which tie he should wear and bringing in his wife and several political consultants to help him with the decision???

"We're Number One!"... in Misery

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Stockton Waterfront

I heard about this on the radio this week. Thanks to William Teach over at Stop the ACLU for posting about it. According to Forbes, my fair city of Stockton California is one of eight California cities to rank on "America's Most Miserable Cities", and not only did we make the Top Ten, we're Number One! (Cleveland, OH, about twenty miles from where I just moved back from a year or so ago, is #10.)

Located in the state's Central Valley, Stockton has been ravaged by the housing bust. Median home prices in the city tripled between 1998 and 2005, when they peaked at $431,000. Now they are back to where they started, as the median price is forecast to be $142,000 this year, according to research firm Economy.com, a decline of 67% from 2005. Foreclosure filings affected 6.9% of homes last year in the Stockton area, the seventh-highest rate in the nation, according to online foreclosure marketplace RealtyTrac.

Stockton's violent crime and unemployment rates also rank among the 10 worst in the country, although violent crime was down 10% in the latest figures from the FBI. Jobless rates are expected to decline or stay flat in most U.S. metro areas in 2011, but in Stockton, unemployment is projected to rise to 18.1% in 2011 after averaging 17.2% in 2010, according to Economy.com.

Frying pan and fire, anyone? Thank you, Liberals!

For those of you who may not be familiar with California geography, here is a map locating Stockton. (About eighty miles inland from the ocean)

Ignore the facts
