This Last Week's Poll

This Last Week's Poll, Obama's Job Approval After 90 Days broke down like this:

Ready For Prime Time (0%)
Stumbles Briefly Off the Blocks (0%)
On Life Support (75%)
DOA (25%)

"Broke down" may be prophetic in its scope!

Thank you for your participation!
Not a scientific poll. Respondents are self selecting. Questions are drawn from fortune cookies, hieroglyphics and tomorrow’s New York Times.

Please make your opinion known in this week's poll.

The Media and The President : Nothing Pressing!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Now that the "Lie to Me - Live" press conference is in the can, what can we learn from the President about the current state of our Union? I've heard that the Gross Domestic Product of the US is now down over six percent. Think any of our press corps was curious enough to ask Obama about it? Nah!
Or the mysterious circumstances (and changing stories) surrounding the buzzing of New York City by Air Force One (sans Obama) and a fighter escort... A question? A clarification?? Nah!
How about:
Mr. President, what enchants you?

Sheesh! I half expected Obama to come out in a swimsuit with a sash for the talent competition!
Heh. Would it be too much to ask for an independent media with an unbiased agenda?

Just asking!

Arlen Specter and the Half Blood Republican

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

J. K. Rowling writes fiction, but Arlen Specter is giving her a run for her money! Listen to this...
"As the Republican Party has moved farther and farther to the right, I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy and more in line with the philosophy of the Democratic Party." -Arlen Specter

Let's examine this with just the tiniest bit of a critical eye! The Republican party of George Bush that Specter was happy to be in and accept help from, has shifted right to be the party of...John McCain??? I don't think so!
McCain is a moderate, not a conservative. If anything, the Republican party, as a whole, has been shifting to the middle, not the right.

If this fairy tale that Specter is telling is in hopes of keeping his fanny in his Senate seat, I suspect that Arlen Specter is not going to live happily ever after!

The Medal of Honor

Private First Class Robert E. Simanek

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company F, in action against enemy aggressor forces. While accompanying a patrol en route to occupy a combat outpost forward of friendly lines, Pfc. Simanek exhibited a high degree of courage and a resolute spirit of self-sacrifice in protecting the lives of his fellow marines. With his unit ambushed by an intense concentration of enemy mortar and small-arms fire, and suffering heavy casualties, he was forced to seek cover with the remaining members of the patrol in a nearby trench line. Determined to save his comrades when a hostile grenade was hurled into their midst, he unhesitatingly threw himself on the deadly missile absorbing the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his body and shielding his fellow marines from serious injury or death. Gravely wounded as a result of his heroic action, Pfc. Simanek, by his daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of almost certain death, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Private Simanek: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

So Long, Arlen! Don't Let the Door Hit Your Fanny on the Way Out!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Arlen Specter, RINO extraordinaire, has jumped ship, switched sides, and joined the Democrat Party. We know that it was a principled move, based on the fact that just five weeks ago, he said he'd never switch. Then, it became apparent he was going to lose the next Republican primary to retain his seat, so he changed parties (probably with the promise of some Dem party and union contributions to his next campaign, in exchange for a flip flop on card check, perhaps??)

Few conservatives will mourn his passing. Party loyalty helped Specter fend off a challenge from conservative Pat Toomey in the last election. Arlen shows his lack of class by totally abandoning his party in what will probably be a vain attempt to hold onto power.

Any one who wants to paint this as leading to the demise of the party is dipping into the realm of wishful thinking. Getting the liberal to moderate Specter out of the party will open a spot for a genuine conservative and another step back in the right direction for the party. This move will ultimately strengthen conservatism, not signal its demise.

Oh, and for those of you worried about my health, I did roll my eyes when I heard White House press secretary Robert Gibbs describe Specter's reasons for becoming a Democrat!

Disease du Jour

Modern times bring forth modern diseases. It wasn’t until after the election of 2000 that anyone ever heard of Bush Derangement Syndrome. Repetitive motion injuries stack like sheaves of hay along side fields of data entry. But, just as carpal tunnel syndrome comes with repetitive movements of the wrist, so this new era of politics has spawned yet another new disease.

It seems as though every day, I hear the exploits of the Obama administration flying Air Force One at low altitude over New York City, with a fighter escort sans giving the public proper notice. I hear of Obama’s latest teleprompter encounter. I hear of the government assuming massive debt and taking control of banks and car companies…

…and I roll my eyes. In fact, I find myself rolling my eyes so often these days, that I fear the repetitive motion may cause damage. Look for reports of Repetitive Eye Rolling Motion Injuries to increase as Obama enters his next 100 days!

Water boarding works because the prisoner does not know the end game. If an athlete knew the end game was never going to be death, they could be mentally and physically trained to become elite "water boarders". Anything that Christopher Hitchens can do once, elite athletes can be trained to do 200 times.

Does this really have to be explained to our leaders? Water boarding is psychological deception. But it only works when the end game is not known.

Obama Photo Op Freaks Out New Yorkers

How about some iconic shots of Air Force One and the Statue of Liberty? Let's just not tell anybody!
Low flying jets buzzing New York...what could be sinister about that?
The mayor’s office was told the jets would only buzz the Statue of Liberty once, and not fly over downtown three times, a source said.
A jumbo jet being chased by a F-16 fighter jets buzzed Lower Manhattan this morning, panicking New Yorkers, many of whom were forced to evacuate their office buildings. It was not a terrorist attack, however, but a photo opportunity for Air Force One, sources told the Post. President Obama was in Washington at the time, but the low-flying 747 circling the Statue of Liberty was one of the planes used as Air Force One, sources said.
How much do you want to bet that this footage shows up in the "reelect Obama" campaign? It's great that there's so little to do in Washington that Obama and his staff (what little there is of it) can concentrate on what's most important to him...yet another political campaign! Another view of panic from the ground:

Obama Below Par on Swine Flu Epidemic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

WASHINGTON -- President Obama went golfing and the Department of Health and Human Services is short a secretary, so other U.S. officials took the controls Sunday as the Obama administration ramps up efforts to find and isolate U.S. cases of swine flu.

Well, we certainly wouldn't want to keep him from his golf game, now, would we? At least four score people have died in Mexico out of 1,400 people effected. And at least 20 cases have been reported (so far) in the US.

The country apparently is running on autopilot until Obama gets around to filling positions at Treasury and Health and Human Services. However, Rob Port noted that
Obama had plenty of time to appoint an official ambassador for the international “earth hour” movement.
Wow! Gotta have your priorities in place, don'tcha know?

Update: The death toll in Mexico has now risen to 103 (11PM PDT)

Monday morning the government braced for austerity, as the government understands that. Having sent Congress a $3.5 trillion budget, the president signaled in advance -- perhaps so his Cabinet members could steel themselves for the new asceticism -- that at the first meeting of his Cabinet he would direct the 15 heads of departments to find economies totaling $100 million, which is about 13 minutes of federal spending, and 0.0029 percent -- about a quarter of one-hundredth of 1 percent -- of $3.5 trillion. If the Agriculture Department sliced the entire $100 million, that would be equal to 0.1 percent of its fiscal 2008 budget.

Obama's Ag Dept Builds Garden: Will History Repeat Itself?

In another sign that the Department of Agriculture is embracing sustainable food, the agency today will unveil expanded plans for a People's Garden that will include the entire six-acre grounds of the Whitten Building, the department's neoclassic marble headquarters on the Mall.

The plans, to be announced at the agency's Earth Day celebrations, include a 1,300-square-foot organic vegetable garden -- slightly larger than the one at the White House -- as well as ornamental flower gardens and bioswales, or mini-wetlands designed to reduce pollution and surface water runoff. The building grounds now are landscaped with grass, flower borders and trees planted to honor a person or mark an event.
-The Proof is in the Planting

They want to call this "The People's Garden". Comrade, er, Secretary Tom Vilsack thinks a token vegetable garden on public grounds will "communicate the agency's mission of sustainability and in particular the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables".

If you recall, Comrade, er, President Obama sponsored a community garden once before...

As a state senator, Barack Obama gave $100,000 in state money to a campaign volunteer who failed to deliver on a plan to create a botanic garden in one of Chicago's most blighted neighborhoods.

Obama -- who was running for Congress when he announced the project in 2000 -- said the green space in Englewood would build ''a sense of neighborhood pride."

Instead, what was supposed to be a six-block stretch of trees and paths is now a field of unfulfilled dreams, strewn with weeds, garbage and broken pavement.

Let's hope the "people" get more for their tax dollars this time than just a broken down, $100,000 plywood gazebo! (It would be nice if the imagery the Obama administration picked for itself was not as suggestive of the creepier forms of socialism, too!)

Corporal Tibor Rubin

Citation.
Corporal Tibor Rubin distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism during the period from July 23, 1950, to April 20, 1953, while serving as a rifleman with Company I, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Republic of Korea. While his unit was retreating to the Pusan Perimeter, Corporal Rubin was assigned to stay behind to keep open the vital Taegu-Pusan Road link used by his withdrawing unit. During the ensuing battle, overwhelming numbers of North Korean troops assaulted a hill defended solely by Corporal Rubin. He inflicted a staggering number of casualties on the attacking force during his personal 24-hour battle, single-handedly slowing the enemy advance and allowing the 8th Cavalry Regiment to complete its withdrawal successfully. Following the breakout from the Pusan Perimeter, the 8 th Cavalry Regiment proceeded northward and advanced into North Korea. During the advance, he helped capture several hundred North Korean soldiers. On October 30, 1950, Chinese forces attacked his unit at Unsan, North Korea, during a massive nighttime assault. That night and throughout the next day, he manned a .30 caliber machine gun at the south end of the unit's line after three previous gunners became casualties. He continued to man his machine gun until his ammunition was exhausted. His determined stand slowed the pace of the enemy advance in his sector, permitting the remnants of his unit to retreat southward. As the battle raged, Corporal Rubin was severely wounded and captured by the Chinese. Choosing to remain in the prison camp despite offers from the Chinese to return him to his native Hungary, Corporal Rubin disregarded his own personal safety and immediately began sneaking out of the camp at night in search of food for his comrades. Breaking into enemy food storehouses and gardens, he risked certain torture or death if caught. Corporal Rubin provided not only food to the starving Soldiers, but also desperately needed medical care and moral support for the sick and wounded of the POW camp. His brave, selfless efforts were directly attributed to saving the lives of as many as forty of his fellow prisoners. Corporal Rubin's gallant actions in close contact with the enemy and unyielding courage and bravery while a prisoner of war are in the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

We are indeed, and we are today, the last best hope of man on earth.

-Ronald Wilson Reagan

Hey! Don't look at me! I was only three months old*!
-Barack Obama

The self absorption of the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue apparently knows no bounds. Past presidents have been mindful of the dignity of the office, of the continuity of history that is incumbent on the Office of the Presidency of the United States. President Obama could not think of anything to say in defense of his country, other than: "It's not my fault!"

Nor was this the first time that Obama has used that particular cop out. Remember during the campaign when someone tried to call Obama to account for his association with known domestic terrorist Bill Ayers? Rather than take a principled stand against violence, Mr. Obama could only dissimulate: "I was only eight at the time of the bombings". In other words, "It's not my fault!"

Reagan's vision of a shining city on a hill was not dependent on when he was born into it, nor was it diminished when he left it. It was an ideal he strove for while he was here. I don't remember Lincoln apologizing for the Founding Fathers for not having eliminated slavery "four score and seven years ago".

"Four score and seven years ago? Hell! I wasn't even born then! You certainly can't blame me for what's happened to the Union!"

Not exactly the nature of words you chisel in granite!

For all those who want to compare Obama to Lincoln...maybe a Prius would be a better choice! (Or a Yugo?)

“I’m grateful President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three months old*,”

Or, Maybe he wants to go with imaginary Lincoln's "Hell, I wasn't even born then!" The invasion at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba was in April 1961. Obama was born three to four months later, in August of '61.

Waiting to Exhale

Remember not that long ago, George W. Bush was berated for being anti-science. He wouldn't allow federal funding for unproven embryonic stem cell research. He never banned the research, he just didn't believe that the taxpayers should pay for it.
But, now, we have an administration with a true respect for science! We have an administration that declares what you exhale, the gas that nurtures and feeds your plants to be "dangerous".

The EPA
"...concluded Friday that greenhouse gases linked to climate change "endanger public health and welfare," setting the stage for regulating them under federal clean air laws."

Gee! A gas you exhale is declared "dangerous" by the government. And it is so! No junk science there! /sarcasm

There were some of us who predicted that the Obamanation would be home to any cockamamie, AlGoreian global warming scheme that came along, and this administration, less than three months old, does not disappoint!

...In announcing the proposed finding, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said it "confirms that greenhouse gas pollution is a serious problem now and for future generations." She reiterated that the Obama administration prefers that climate change be address by Congress through broad, economy-wide limits on climate-changing pollution. But the EPA finding of endangerment prepares for possible regulatory action if Congress fails to act.

A serious problem? Doug Ross had this graphic about a week ago:

Oooh! Look at those "dangerous levels" of man made carbon dioxide! 3.4 per cent of 3.62 per cent of 2 percent... And if Congress doesn't act, a bunch of appointed bureaucrats will! Makes me glad we elected a "man of science" to the White House. (Just not last year!)

Corporal Ronald E. Rosser

Citation:
Cpl. Rosser, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. While assaulting heavily fortified enemy hill positions, Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, was stopped by fierce automatic-weapons, small-arms, artillery, and mortar fire. Cpl. Rosser, a forward observer was with the lead platoon of Company L, when it came under fire from 2 directions. Cpl. Rosser turned his radio over to his assistant and, disregarding the enemy fire, charged the enemy positions armed with only carbine and a grenade. At the first bunker, he silenced its occupants with a burst from his weapon. Gaining the top of the hill, he killed 2 enemy soldiers, and then went down the trench, killing 5 more as he advanced. He then hurled his grenade into a bunker and shot 2 other soldiers as they emerged. Having exhausted his ammunition, he returned through the enemy fire to obtain more ammunition and grenades and charged the hill once more. Calling on others to follow him, he assaulted 2 more enemy bunkers. Although those who attempted to join him became casualties, Cpl. Rosser once again exhausted his ammunition obtained a new supply, and returning to the hilltop a third time hurled grenades into the enemy positions. During this heroic action Cpl. Rosser single-handedly killed at least 13 of the enemy. After exhausting his ammunition he accompanied the withdrawing platoon, and though himself wounded, made several trips across open terrain still under enemy fire to help remove other men injured more seriously than himself. This outstanding soldier's courageous and selfless devotion to duty is worthy of emulation by all men. He has contributed magnificently to the high traditions of the military service.

Actor Woody Harrelson may be the world's first victim of PTMBD: Post Traumatic Make Believe Disorder!

VP Joe Biden: Serial Prefabricator

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Because "Serial Prefabricator" sounds so much nicer than "liar"!

My friend Rob stirred things up a little, earlier this week, with a report of a bitchy, and otherwise unnecessary correction of a soldier, by Jill Biden, in a receiving line. Some doubted the quality of the "hearsay", though the words were uttered in public, and there's at least some chance of the remark having been heard by someone in front of or behind Rob's friend in the receiving line for corroboration.

Joe, on the other hand, is making up stories, starring Joe Biden, having long conversations with and giving sage and pithy advice to former President George Bush, alone in the Oval Office. Karl Rove has a simple reply to that:

Republican strategist Karl Rove called Vice President Biden a "liar" on Thursday, dramatically escalating a feud between Biden and aides to former President George W. Bush over Biden's claims to have rebuked Bush in private meetings.

"I hate to say this, but he's a serial exaggerator," Rove told FOX News. "If I was being unkind I would say liar. But it is a habit he ought to drop."

Rove added: "You should not exaggerate and lie like this when you are the Vice President of the United States."

In Joe's mind, he was there gently rebuking Bush whenever Bush said something uncharacteristic of himself. Like the following exchange:

"I remember President Bush saying to me one time in the Oval Office," Biden began, "'Well, Joe,' he said, 'I'm a leader.' And I said: 'Mr. President, turn and around look behind you. No one is following.'"

Just two guys hanging out in the Oval Office and Bush turns to Biden and says "I'm a leader." This takes far more credulity on the part of the listener to believe than that a PhD would take offense at not being addressed as "Doctor"!

The exchange is purely "fictional," said Rove, who was Bush's top political adviser in the White House.

"It didn't happen," Rove, a FOX News contributor and former Bush adviser, told Megyn Kelly in an interview taped for "On The Record." "It's his imagination; it's a made-up, fictional world.

"He ought to get out of it and get back to reality," Rove added. "He's making this up out of whole cloth."

Rove also said few presidents would spend a long time with anybody in the Oval Office, particularly "with all due respect, a blowhard like Joe Biden."

Now you see! I can picture Karl Rove calling Biden a "blowhard", I just can't picture Biden the blowhard being invited into the Oval Office for long heart to heart chats with the former President! It just doesn't ring true!
Of course, if Biden were telling the truth, there should be appointment books and Secret Service logs that would verify the dates and times that Biden had his imaginary chats with Bush. Perhaps on his way from his favorite diner that had closed years before? Or on his way to the Home Depot? Or the Library of Congress to peruse old videotape of FDR's TV addresses to the nation during the Great Depression?

Yeah. Right!

Quote du jour

One of the nuggets I've gleaned from several radio sources is that Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who has been in the aggressive forefront of the campaign to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, is married to Tom Athans, who works extensively with left-wing radio organizations and was once the executive vice-president of Air America, the liberal radio syndicate that, despite massive publicity from major media, has failed miserably to win a national audience. Stabenow's outrageous conflict of interest has of course been largely ignored by the prestige press, which should have been demanding that she recuse herself from all political involvement with this issue.

Quote du jour

As recently as December, the Times ran a story reporting that the Air Force wanted 60 more F-22s, and though the cost of the additional planes was estimated at $9 billion, in the era of trillion dollar deficits, that seems hardly the sort of expenditure that would cause a blink of an eye, especially given the number of jobs that will be lost if the plane's production lines are shuttered.

Against the backdrop of wild spending and massive deficits, the Pentagon cuts are startling. The first mission of the federal government is the nation's defense, and the president's budget spends billions on unnecessary and wasted spending while taking the knife to the country's weapons' systems.

The Medal of Honor

Master Sergeant Ola L. Mize

Citation:
M/Sgt. Mize, a member of Company K, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. Company K was committed to the defense of "Outpost Harry", a strategically valuable position, when the enemy launched a heavy attack. Learning that a comrade on a friendly listening post had been wounded he moved through the intense barrage, accompanied by a medical aid man, and rescued the wounded soldier. On returning to the main position he established an effective defense system and inflicted heavy casualties against attacks from determined enemy assault forces which had penetrated into trenches within the outpost area. During his fearless actions he was blown down by artillery and grenade blasts 3 times but each time he dauntlessly returned to his position, tenaciously fighting and successfully repelling hostile attacks. When enemy onslaughts ceased he took his few men and moved from bunker to bunker, firing through apertures and throwing grenades at the foe, neutralizing their positions. When an enemy soldier stepped out behind a comrade, prepared to fire, M/Sgt. Mize killed him, saving the life of his fellow soldier. After rejoining the platoon, moving from man to man, distributing ammunition, and shouting words of encouragement he observed a friendly machinegun position overrun. He immediately fought his way to the position, killing 10 of the enemy and dispersing the remainder. Fighting back to the command post, and finding several friendly wounded there, he took a position to protect them. Later, securing a radio, he directed friendly artillery fire upon the attacking enemy's routes of approach. At dawn he helped regroup for a counterattack which successfully drove the enemy from the outpost. M/Sgt. Mize's valorous conduct and unflinching courage reflect lasting glory upon himself and uphold the noble traditions of the military service.

Master Sergeant Mize: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Contrary to left-wing myths, I wasn’t a fan of the Bush administration. (I called for Donald Rumsfeld to get the boot in mid-2001.) But fair’s fair. Despite his many faults, Bush sought to do good. Obama just wants to look good.

Quote du jour

Eleanor Holmes Norton, the nonvoting D.C. delegate to the House who aspires to be its voting representative, has made clear that she regards questions of constitutionality as irrelevant and that she thinks members of the House and Senate do, too. "I don't think members are in the least bit affected in their votes on the question of its constitutionality," she said just last week. "People vote their politics in the House and in the Senate."
